How tipping math works.
A tip is a percentage of the bill added on top — typically 15–20% at a sit-down restaurant in the US. This calculator multiplies your bill by the tip percent, then divides the total across any number of people for a clean split.

Traditionally tips are computed on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice most people tip on the total because it's easier and the difference is small. This calculator treats whatever you enter as the base — enter the subtotal for pre-tax math, or the total with tax for post-tax math.

How much should I tip?+
In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurant service; 20% is a safe baseline at sit-down restaurants. 10% is common at counter-service or for takeout. Outside the US, tipping norms vary widely — in many European and East Asian countries, tipping is minimal or not expected.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?+
Technically on the pre-tax total is the etiquette-book answer. In practice most people tip on the total including tax because it's simpler and the difference is small. Enter whichever bill you want; the calculator doesn't care.
How is the split calculated?+
Evenly. Total (bill + tip) divided by the number of people, rounded to two decimals. If the split doesn't divide cleanly, the last person effectively pays the penny rounding difference — we don't attempt to distribute leftover cents.
Can I share or save the calculation?+
