§ 02 / ABOUT
How it works.
Pressure is force per area. The SI unit is the pascal (Pa) — one newton per square meter. Most everyday units (bar, atm, psi) are large multiples of the pascal because one pascal is tiny.
// THE KEY CONVERSIONS
- 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa = 0.0689 bar
- 1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 14.504 psi (close to but not exactly 1 atm)
- 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 14.696 psi = 1.01325 bar = 760 torr
- 1 torr / mmHg = 133.322 Pa
// USE IT FOR
- Tires — converting US psi to European bar/kPa.
- Scuba — bar is the global standard for tank pressure and depth.
- Weather — millibars and inHg appear on barometers and forecasts.
- Medical — blood pressure in mmHg.
- Engineering — kPa and MPa for materials, hydraulics, pneumatics.
§ 03 / FAQ
Common questions.
How do I convert psi to bar?+
Divide by 14.5038. Example: 30 psi ÷ 14.5038 ≈ 2.07 bar. Reverse: bar × 14.5038 ≈ psi.
What’s 1 atmosphere in psi?+
14.696 psi at sea level (standard atmosphere). Also 1.01325 bar, 101.325 kPa, or 760 torr/mmHg. The slight difference between 1 atm and 1 bar is why old altimeters drift after weather changes.
Why is tire pressure in psi but scuba tanks in bar?+
US automotive industry standardized on psi early; the rest of the world uses bar (or kPa for precision). Scuba is global so it converged on bar. A typical car tire is 30-35 psi (~2.1-2.4 bar); a full scuba tank is 200-300 bar.
What’s torr / mmHg?+
Torr (named after Torricelli) and millimeters of mercury are essentially the same unit — the pressure that supports 1 mm of mercury in a barometer. 1 atm = 760 torr. Still standard in medicine for blood pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg) and in vacuum work.
