§ 02 / ABOUT

How it works.

Pick a value, pick the unit you have, pick the unit you want. Every volume unit is stored as a multiplier of liters; converting from A to B is (value × A.factor) ÷ B.factor. US gallons and imperial (UK) gallons are both included — they’re different sizes and the distinction matters.

// THE KEY CONVERSIONS

  • 1 US cup = 236.59 mL = 16 US tbsp = 8 fl oz
  • 1 US tablespoon = 14.79 mL = 3 US tsp
  • 1 US fl oz = 29.57 mL
  • 1 US pint = 16 fl oz = 473.18 mL
  • 1 US quart = 32 fl oz = 0.946 L
  • 1 US gallon = 128 fl oz = 3.785 L
  • 1 imperial (UK) gallon = 160 UK fl oz = 4.546 L

// USE IT FOR

  • Cooking — recipes that mix metric and US units, or US and UK
  • Mixing & dosing — meds, cleaners, fertilizers
  • Fuel — US gal vs UK gal vs liters
  • Beverages — bottle volumes across markets

// FOR BAKING SPECIFICALLY

Volume is the wrong measurement for dry ingredients — flour, sugar, and friends pack differently every time. Use Cups to Grams for accurate mass per ingredient.

§ 03 / FAQ

Common questions.

How many milliliters in a cup?+
A US cup is 236.59 mL. A "metric cup" used in some recipes is rounded to 250 mL (Australia, NZ). Recipe books rarely specify; if precision matters, pick one cup definition and stick with it.
Are US gallons and UK gallons the same?+
No, and the difference is large. 1 US gallon = 3.785 L = 128 US fl oz. 1 imperial (UK) gallon = 4.546 L = 160 UK fl oz. So a "1 gal" jug means very different volumes depending on which side of the Atlantic. We list both.
How do I convert teaspoons to milliliters?+
1 US teaspoon = 4.929 mL. 1 US tablespoon = 14.787 mL = 3 teaspoons. For cooking, 5 mL per teaspoon and 15 mL per tablespoon are close enough — that’s why metric measuring spoons use those round numbers.
Why is a fluid ounce different from a weight ounce?+
Because they measure different things. A fluid ounce is volume; an avoirdupois ounce is mass. They’re only equal for water (about 1 fl oz of water weighs 1.04 oz). For cooking and for ingredients with very different densities (oil, honey, flour), they’re not interchangeable. The Cups → Grams tool handles ingredient-aware mass.
